Dear Liberty,

I was looking at a Father’s Day pictorial tribute on the Internet when I noticed the word “partner” was used instead of wife.  It reminded me that God does want a man and woman to be partners, but it is so much more than that.

“Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’ “ Genesis 2:18

The original Hebrew text for “helper”, or ezer k’enegdo, is translated more accurately as “help meet”.  Looking even deeper, the root of ezer is “to be strong” or “strength”.  K’enegdo is only used in this passage in the Bible and means “in front of”, “opposite” or “exactly corresponding to”.

Those wanting to discredit the Bible misuse passages like this to imply the Bible describes women as inferior to men.  In truly studying and understanding God’s Word and desire for his children you realize that our Heavenly Father was actually creating someone who was not only equal to but also completed Adam.  Someone who was opposite but exactly corresponded to him, like a mirror image.  God designed Eve to be Adam’s reflective opposite, not a carbon copy of Adam, possessing the qualities, characteristics, functions and attributes that he did not have.  Adam and Eve were equivalent but different.  Men and women were meant to complement each other and when the two come together, they become one.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24

Now, God also said, “Be fruitful and multiply.”  You will hear this story time and time again over the years but everyone who knew your father before you were born knew he did not want children.  There was no interest there at all, mainly because he understood the awesome responsibility parents have in raising their children.  But Liberty, from the moment your father found out God had blessed us with you, he could not have been prouder.  He displayed your first ultrasound photo at work, he took amazing care of me and treated me like a queen, and he bragged to anybody who would listen about the amazing little girl he was going to have.   For a man who never wanted children I never saw more love, more affection, and more pride from anyone than what I saw in your father from the moment he first laid eyes on you.

You are too little right now to understand Father’s Day, but I hope over the years you come to appreciate to opportunity to recognize how wonderful your daddy is.  Liberty, your earthly father is a sinful man.  He makes mistakes and he can be difficult sometimes, but he is one of the most Godly men you will ever know.  He’s my strength when I am vulnerable, he gives me courage when I feel like a coward, he’s my light when I’m in darkness, and he is always the Stiller to my Meara.  He is tender, cool-headed, and forgiving, but he will correct you when he believes you are in error.  He will also teach you the most important thing you will ever know, the love and compassion of your Heavenly Father and how He sent His only begotten son to die for your sins so that you may live with Him for eternity.

There is a saying that woman are attracted to men who remind them of their fathers.  Liberty, if that is true, you will be blessed.  But come what may remember that the relationship with your Heavenly Father is the most important relationship of all and He will be there for you no matter what.  And for those times you need someone here on earth to hold you and tell you it’s all right, or to sneak you a piece of gum when mommy’s not looking, He gave you a daddy who loves you more than any daddy could every love his little girl.

     That’s my 2 cents.

Love,

Mom
